Men in general might not wear salwar kameez or kurta pyjama very often and for most of them it could be for a specific occasion only. As the pyjama kurta and salwar kameez is a traditional outfit, the opportunity to wear it also gets limited.

In general men would wear kurta-pyjamas for marriages, temples, festivals, play/concert or casually. These are a few occasions during which men can possibly choose to wear salwar kameez or kurta-pajama while it is a regular affair for women. Although in a few north Indian states the kurta pyjama and salwar kameez is a regular traditional outfit and if you take an average of men who would wear these clothes on regular basis as opposed to pants and shirts, probably the number would be very less.

But urban men are quite experimental with clothing and they have plenty of option nowadays, especially with ethnic wear such as the salwar kameez and kurta-pajamas, they have a wide variety to choose from and number of people who wear this particular dress is gradually growing.

Make a careful note of the body measurements and the next step is to cut on the marked lines and remember to place the draft exactly on the spot. And then fold the cloth in reverse so as to the two selvedge comes on top and the same goes with the remaining two ends. Once done with making of the cloth outline ensure you leave an inch of cloth on the sides while half an inch of cloth has to be towards the neck, armhole and shoulder. When you are finished with the cutting of the lining and the main cloth, stitch them in unison near the curves & sides.

For the stitching the lower region, fold the two selvedges of the cloth and use the measurements to cut the remaining two cloth pieces to use it for front and back areas. While the design of an anarkali suit sound too conventional, yet it has become an element of evergreen fashion and its popular attire at the wedding malls and social functions. So embrace them. Instructions on how to make a kurta for a male?

Do you want to give a surprise gift for your hubby, brother or friend this Diwali? Then nothing like stitching a nice kurta for him, it sure will make your Diwali brighter. Let us begin with the requirements to stitch the kurta…

  • Get a nice silk or satin fabric, which should be at least 2.25 yards or 2.5 yards depending on the height of the person you will be stitching the kurta for.
  • Pick a loose-fitting t-shirt of the respective person to get the shoulder and armhole measurements.
  • The remaining measurements you will need to take, which are as follows: the length of the kurta until knee or little longer as per your requirement would be ‘A’, mark the shoulder to wrist measurement as ‘B’, for hip it would be ‘C’ and again the shoulder to hip marking would be ‘D’.
  • Next is to take the material and make the marking to match the measurements you have noted down on both front and back regions and then cut the cloth accordingly. Cut two separate pieces for plackets (you can look at youtube.com for placket tutorial to get a clear idea).
  • Then comes attaching the cut pieces; attach shoulder for both front & back pieces followed by adding the placket for desired length. Make buttonholes and stitch the buttons.
  • Once you are done with the stitching up the front and back of the kurta along with the plackets you can move to the hands; cut two pieces for hands with length ‘B’ measurement. The best thing to do at this juncture is take any full-sleeve shirt and increase or reduce the width according the person’s needs. Now, attach the sides with around 12” opening for side opening.
  • Now remains the collar part; take an interfacing material for collar measuring 1” wide while the width of the collar cloth should be 2.5” if you want 1” collar. Take the necking measurement and add half an inch extra for seam allowance. The next step is to fold the collar piece width-wise by joining the right sides. Stitch along the end with a quarter inch seam allowance near the bottom for one side, then turn right side out and tuck the interfacing cloth inside and close the opening by folding the edge inside and attach this to the neck region of the kurta. Your kurta is complete once you hem the end of sleeves and the bottom. A serger would be of great help for completing the seams. You might have never thought that kurta stitching could be such a simple task, did you?

The traditional Indian clothing salwar kameez and kurta-pyjama do not bear much of a difference; in fact at the first look of the dresses you can hardly make out any differences, they are just about the same at least in their design/patterns.

The difference is that salwar is a loose-fitting pant worn with a kameez or a long top while kurta is normally worn over a churidaar or pajama. And the pajamas are more of straight-cut pants and the churidaars are nothing but the push-up pants.

Kurta can be teamed up with jeans as well as a churidaar while a salwar-kameez comes in a set along with a scarf or stole that is worn around the neck, and all the three are nicely combined to give a complete dress.

Long kurta or Short Kurta – What should I wear?

Most of us cannot decide if the clothes we wear would actually suit our physicality; for instance clothes with vertical stripes can make you look taller and clothes with huge prints are big no for plus size individuals, as that could make you look bulkier. Minute details as these make so much of difference to your overall presentation and personality.

Of course whether you want to wear long kurta or short kurta is a personal choice but if you think otherwise that clothing is an integral part of your overall personality and adds to your confidence level then you must consider a few factors while choosing the right clothes. Height and weight are the keys factors, as they alter the way you look to a large extent, for instance if you are very tall then a short kurta might not look very great, a long kurta would be a better option but if you are of an average height then both long kurta and short kurta will suit you and in fact long kurta will make you make you look a couple of inches taller, plus size people should stick to long kurtas and if you are short and stout goes for long kurtas only.

How to wash a kurta?

Your favourite kurta or kurtas need proper care and the first thing one must remember is that if you are planning to wash your new kurta, take the services of a drycleaner for the first wash after which you can wash them at home. Whether it is mens kurta or female kurta the treatment will be the same, read on for some more instructions…

  • Do not soak the kurta especially if they are adorned with embellishment or embroidery.
  • Hand-wash the kurta with mild soap and do not wash colored clothes along with white colored cotton kurtas.
  • Be it silk kurta, cotton kurta, khadhi kurta or tusser silk kurta please do not use bleach
  • Do not wring or tumble the kurta
  • Do not dry the kurtas under direct sunlight and ensure you use a hanger to dry them
  • For silk kurtas with embroidery or embellishment, dry cleaning is always a safer option.
  • Do not press the kurta with hot iron, dampen the cloth and set the iron on medium or low heat based on the material of the kurta.
